    La elección de Lai Ching-te como nuevo presidente de Taiwan en las elecciones presidenciales y legislativas del 13 de enero han abierto una nueva era en esta isla. Es la tercera ocasión consecutiva que los taiwaneses han votado por el candidato del Partido Progresista Democrático (PPD), que defiende la independencia de la isla. Una elección que sitúa a China ante el dilema de que estrategia seguir para mostrar su descontento ante lo que considera una peligrosa deriva hacia la soberanía de Taiwan.

    Pekín puede continuar con sus amenazas, incluido el uso de la fuerza, o cambiar de estrategia para intentar seducir a los taiwaneses y lograr la reunificación de la isla con China continental. El presidente de China, Xi Jinping, tiene la última palabra.

    The election of Lai Ching-te as the new president of Taiwan in the presidential and legislative elections on January 13 has opened a new era on this island. It is the third time in a row that Taiwanese have voted for the Democratics Progressive Party (DPP) candidate, who defends the island’s independence. An election they places China in the dilemma of what strategy to follow to show its discontent at what if considers a dangerous drift towards the sovereignty of Taiwan.
