Antonin, « roman familial » d’Henri Bosco

    In spite of the author’s assertions that this “barely fictionalized” autobiography of his childhood should be considered as “an easy, tender book that delicately moves towards hope”, Antonin, published in 1952, betrays the very hard moral crisis that Henri Bosco went through in the early 1950s. The succession of families that welcomed the child during his parents’absences, as well as the trials and adventures he underwent, invite us to read this story as a troubling “family novel”. The young boy repeats, even in his runaways, the scenario of the “foundling” unable to face the “rough reality to embrace” and escaping into a dreamlike and wonderful world. Closer to L’Antiquaire (1954), a novel of exorcism, than to L’Enfant et la rivière (1945), a happy juvenile fiction, Antonin prefigures the “work in the dark” of the last Bosco.

    Malgré les affirmations de son auteur qui invitait à considérer cette autobiographie « à peine romancée » de son enfance comme « un livre facile, tendre et qui va délicatement vers l’espoir », Antonin, publié en 1952, trahit la très dure crise morale traversée par Henri Bosco au début des années 1950. La succession des familles qui accueillent l’enfant pendant les absences de ses parents, ainsi que les épreuves et aventures qu’il y subit, invitent en effet à lire ce récit comme un troublant « roman familial ». Le jeune garçon y répète, jusque dans ses fugues, le scénario de l’« enfant trouvé » incapable d’affronter la « réalité rugueuse à étreindre » et s’échappant dans un monde onirique et merveilleux. Plus proche de L’Antiquaire (1954), livre exorcisme que de L’Enfant et la rivière(1945), heureuse fiction juvénile, Antonin préfigure bel et bien l’« œuvre au noir » du dernier Bosco.
