Polymorphie des images filmiques, fictions plastiques de la métamorphose (Tourneur, Weerasethakul)

    La Féline (Jacques Tourneur, 1942) and Tropical Malady (Apichatpong Weerasethakul, 2004) construct an analogous formal reasoning around animal metamorphosis. This is not so much the object of a spectacular and horrifying representation but becomes the plastic subject of the film, which takes advantage of the combinatorial movement of images to undo the fixity of representations and the fixity of identities. That the cinema is by nature, and therefore since its origin, an instrument of transformability and not only a device conducive to staging metamorphoses, or that it has become one precisely for this reason, is an idea that Tourneur and Weerasethakul reconsider in their own way by assimilating the mutability of fantastic bodies to the phenomena of image polymorphy operated by the filmic process.

    La Féline (Jacques Tourneur, 1942) et Tropical Malady (Apichatpong Weerasethakul, 2004) construisent un raisonnement formel analogue autour de la métamorphose animale. Celle-ci ne fait pas tellement l’objet d’une représentation spectaculaire et horrifique mais devient le sujet plastique du film, qui tire parti du mouvement combinatoire des images pour défaire la fixité des représentations et la fixité des identités. Que le cinéma soit par nature, et donc depuis son origine, un instrument de transformabilité et pas seulement un dispositif propice à mettre en scène des métamorphoses, ou qu’il le soit devenu précisément pour cette raison-là, est une idée que Tourneur et Weerasethakul reconsidèrent à leur manière en assimilant la mutabilité des corps fantastiques aux phénomènes de polymorphie des images opérés par le processus filmique.
