    Este texto presenta dos miradas al fenómeno universitario en América Latina desde una perspectiva historiográfica. En primera instancia, se hace referencia, de manera general, a la atención que las y los investigadores en historia de la educación han prestado al ámbito universitario. Para ello se privilegia el análisis de encuentros académicos y publicaciones histórico-educacionales, entendiendo que el asunto que concita nuestra atención rebasa, por supuesto, ese ámbito acotado. Posteriormente, en el afán de ilustrar acerca de la potencialidad que ofrece el campo de estudio sobre el mundo universitario, se propone una perspectiva temática específica (los movimientos estudiantiles), la que es tomada como un espacio para discutir posibles nuevos ejes de análisis que se encuentren más estrechamente alineados con las preocupaciones académicas y políticas del tiempo reciente.

    The article identifies the university field as one of the issues that have been addressed by the history of Latin American education, defined by one of its main manifestations: the existence of a community and scientific realm that has been regularly expressed through continental meetings on the history of education, the CIHELA (Ibero-American Congresses on the His-tory of Latin American Education) being the most massive and permanent events in the last three decades. An overview of the discussions on the histo-ry of the universities present in these scientific meetings is presented, based on which it is maintained that, despite the relevance of the university phe-nomenon, its presence has been comparatively milder in correlation with the studies dedicated to school teaching. Given the breadth and complexity of the field of tertiary education as a research space, the second part of this text is proposed to account for the advances of a specific thematic perspec-tive of the university field: the history of student movements, which is taken as a space that allows us to recognize and discuss possible new axes of analysis that are more closely aligned with the academic and political con-cerns of recent times
