Starting from the comparison with the models of Petrarch and Leopardi, this contribution focuses on the functional relationship between meter and speech in Ada Negri’s, Mario Novaro’s and Francesco Pastonchi’s canzoni, identifying in the structural and expressive effects the main reasons for the adhesion or the deviation, the compensation or the free modulation of the syntax with respect to a form that, despite manifest signs of opening, still retains numerous closing features
