La mayoría de los centros de conservación fílmicos fueron apareciendo de manera gradual durante todo el siglo XX. Sin embargo, no todos lo hicieron con total independencia de los museos de arte moderno en los que nacieron y su labor variará en función de la importancia cultural del patrimonio fílmico. Creados con el fin de proteger la producción cinematográfica nacional, no todas las productoras veían con especial interés el hecho de que una entidad ajena poseyera el objeto físico. Con los avances en la imagen cinematográfica y el auge de lo digital, las filmotecas han tenido que ir adaptándose a los cambios de paradigma. La Filmoteca de Japón no es un caso diferente de otros centros de conservación del patrimonio fílmico y su historia está íntimamente ligada al desarrollo de la industria cinematográfica del país. Especial atención merece el estudio histórico del edificio, así como de las personas ajenas a la cultura oficial que posibilitaron que en Japón se creara una Filmoteca Nacional, una institución relativamente moderna en comparación con otros centros de otros países.

Most film national centres emerged throughout the 20th century. Initially, many film preservation centres were indeed affiliated with or dependent on Modern Art Museums policies. Their work varied depending on the cultural significance of the film heritage and their activity relied on the budget allocated to film preservation. Created with the aim of protecting national film production, not all film studios saw with particular interest the fact that an entity external to the studios owned the physical object. With advances in cinematographic image and the rise of digital technology, film archives have had to adapt to paradigm shifts. The National Film Archive of Japan is not a differentiated case from other film heritage conservation centres, and its history is intimately linked to the development of the country's film industry. Special attention deserves the historical study of the building, as well as of the individuals who made it possible for Japan to create a National Film Archive, a relatively modern institution compared to other centres outside Japan.
