Resumen de La caja árabe de la Catedral de Ávila: un ejemplo singular de metalistería islámica medieval

  La Catedral de Ávila conserva una pequeña caja rectangular metálica, dorada y con incrustaciones de plata y esmalte negro, decorada íntegramente con motivos geométricos, vegetales, figurados y epigráficos árabes, que responde en todo a las características estilísticas del arte islámico medieval. Fue hallada circunstancialmente en el año 2020, no teniendo constancia de su procedencia ni fecha de ingreso. Es una pieza única y excepcional, que se añade con voz propia al catálogo de piezas metálicas medievales, de cobre o sus aleaciones, nieladas y damasquinadas en plata, con leyendas árabes, existente en el panorama museístico y del coleccionismo internacional. La función originaria de la caja fue la de estuche para el cálamo y escribanía portátil (en árabe maqlama, aunque en la literatura científica se ha generalizado el nombre persa de qalamdān). Se estudia aquí su lugar de producción, autoría, función y significado, así como las posibles vías de llegada a Ávila.

  A small rectangular metal box, gilded and inlaid with silver and black enamel, decorated entirely with geometric, vegetal, figurative and Arabic epigraphic motifs, all of which correspond to the stylistic characteristics of medieval Islamic art, is kept in the Cathedral of Ávila. It was found by chance in the year 2020, and there is no record of where it came from or when it was found. It is a unique and exceptional piece that adds substantially to the catalogue of medieval metal pieces, made of copper or its alloys, nielloed and damascened in silver, with Arabic inscriptions, in the international museum and collector’s scene. The original function of the box was as a case for the calamus and portable writing instrument (in Arabic maqlama, although the Persian name qalamdān has become widespread in the scientific literature). The place of production, authorship, function and significance, as well as the possible routes of arrival in Ávila, are examined here
