La espirometría es una prueba no invasiva de función respiratoria que evalúa la función ventilatoria del pulmón, a partir del análisis del aire que inspira y espira una persona. Esta prueba constituye una práctica habitual en Atención Primaria, que permite diagnosticar enfermedades respiratorias como el asma, la fibrosis quística y la enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica (EPOC) entre otras. Además, también se puede utilizar de forma periódica para controlar la evolución de estas enfermedades y verificar si el tratamiento está siendo efectivo o no.
Si bien existen estándares internacionales para la realización e interpretación de espirometrías, resulta fundamental desde un punto de vista práctico, reflejar todos los aspectos necesarios para la correcta preparación del paciente de cara a una buena realización del procedimiento.

Spirometry is a non-invasive respiratory function test that evaluates the ventilatory function of the lung, based on the analysis of the air that a person inspires and exhales. This test is a common practice in Primary Care, which allows the diagnosis of respiratory diseases such as asthma, cystic fibrosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), among others. In addition, it can also be used periodically to monitor the evolution of these diseases and verify whether the treatment is being effective or not.
Although there are international standards for the performance and interpretation of spirometry, it is essential from a practical point of view to reflect all the necessary aspects for the correct preparation of the patient for a good performance of the procedure.
