  Hoy en día las enfermedades cardiovasculares están en auge, siendo la fibrilación auricular un gran reto para la medicina actual. La fibrilación auricular es un ritmo cardíaco irregular que suele causar latidos cardíacos anormales y muy rápidos. Se trata del tipo de arritmia cardiaca más común y se produce cuando la frecuencia cardiaca y el ritmo cardiaco se alteran y dejan de ser regulares. Un corazón que funciona con normalidad suele latir entre 60-100 veces por minuto, mientras que en la fibrilación auricular la frecuencia suele oscilar entre 100-175 latidos.

  En este artículo monográfico, se ha realizado una revisión sobre las causas de esta enfermedad, los síntomas y las principales complicaciones cuando no se trata correctamente, así como las pruebas diagnósticas más importantes, los posibles tratamientos que existen y la manera en la que se puede intentar prevenir la aparición de esta arritmia.

  Cardiovascular diseases are on the rise today, with atrial fibrillation being a major challenge for medicine today. Atrial fibrillation is an irregular heart rhythm that usually causes abnormal and very fast heartbeats. It is the most common type of cardiac arrhythmia and occurs when the heart rate and heart rhythm are altered and no longer regular. A normally functioning heart usually beats between 60-100 times per minute, whereas in atrial fibrillation the rate usually ranges between 100-175 beats.

  In this monographic article, we have reviewed the causes of this disease, the symptoms and the main complications when it is not treated correctly, as well as the most important diagnostic tests, the possible treatments that exist and the way in which we can try to prevent the appearance of this arrhythmia.
