Cómic, ciudad fronteriza. El cómic entendido como tercero emergente

    Uno de los ejes que articulan esta intervención gira en torno a las relaciones entre imagen y texto en los cómics. Un segundo eje es el que relaciona la historieta con el aspecto cívico (de cives) y político (de polis) de la vida en la ciudad. La fusión de ambos ejes la proporciona aquí una visión conjunta de la iconología de W. J. T. Mitchell, por una parte, más, por otra parte, los planteamientos de algunos ponentes del coloquio de Cerisy de 1987 (Thierry Groensteen, Thierry Smolderen, Antonio Altarriba, Benoît Peeters) y algún allegado a este grupo (Jean-Christophe Menu), más la práctica subsiguiente de autores próximos a L’Association. Con este fin distingo, metodológicamente, entre el internalismo y el externalismo, y también entre la poiética (en relación con la cives) y el poder (vinculado a la polis). Los habitantes de la ciudad fronteriza del cómic son sujetos encarnados que, bien como autores, bien como lectores, proyectan sus representaciones en las historietas que escriben, dibujan o leen. Es de esas proyecciones de donde emergen los cómics, que son estos así más que la suma de sus partes. Se muestra, en fin, que los estudios visuales anglonorteamericanos no han de ser incompatibles con cierta teoría francesa sobre cómics (French Comics Theory).

    One of the axes that articulate this intervention revolves around the relationships between image and text in comics. A second axis is the one that relates the comic strip to the civic (cives) and political (polis) aspects of life in the city. The fusion of both axes is provided here by a joint vision of the iconology of W. J. T. Mitchell, on the one hand, plus, on the other hand, the approaches of some speakers at the 1987 Cerisy colloquium (Thierry Groensteen, Thierry Smolderen, Antonio Altarriba, Benoît Peeters) and someone close to this group (Jean-Christophe Menu), plus the subsequent practice of authors close to L'Association. To this end I distinguish, methodologically, between internalism and externalism, and also between poietics (in relation to the cives) and power (linked to the polis). The inhabitants of the border city of comics are embodied subjects who, either as authors or as readers, project their representations in the comics they write, draw or read. It is from these projections that comics emerge, which are thus more than the sum of their parts. Finally, it is shown that Anglo-American visual studies must not be incompatible with a certain French theory on comics (French Comics Theory).
