Fátima Bethencourt Pérez, Ernest Kowalczyk
One of the Prado's first major acquisitions of a British painting was a portrait by Thomas Lawrence, purchased in 1959 for the museum's 'British Paintings Room', which had been opened the previous year. New information about the sitter, Martha Carr, allows the painting to be dated to around the time of her marriage, in November 1790. It appears to have been originally paired with a lost portrait by Lawrence of her housband, Thomas Chinnal Porter.
