In 1804 Girodet exhibited at the Salon a portrait of a retired Mamluk soldier, 'Katchef Dahouth', who had served in Napoleon's army. He is here identified as Davud Gürcü, a former official in Ottoman Egypt of Georgian origin, whose choice of name and costume for the painting deliberately obscured his status as a refugee in France
