The project Cinema in the Square/Cultural Intervention, conducted in three stages between 2006 and 2011, consistedof free screenings of Brazilian films projected in public squares associated with other cultural activities. Cinema inthe Square was intended to modify the imaginary of the inhabitants of Paracambi, a town located in the state ofRio de Janeiro, about the asylum population that, after years hospitalized in the Nursing Home Dr. Eiras – a lunaticasylum in the city -, would live integrated with the local population – more specifically, in therapeutic homes speciallybuilt for this purpose.Throughout public opinion polls and researches, it was found that the project increased from85% to 94% the percentage of inhabitants of Paracambi who believed that the mentally ill are “people consideredabnormal by society, but with medical orientation, they can get along with the community and people considerednormal”. Would a project grounded only in movies exhibition have gotten the same results? And a project with thesame goals without involving audiovisual media, could it be so effective? This communication aims to present areflection (not answers) about the pedagogical possibilities of audiovisual media through the analysis of the projectCinema in the Square/Cultural Intervention.
