Using movies is an effective strategy for language teaching: students are more motivated, speak more, learn morevocabulary and culture. My paper will present an original method, which allows teachers to get even better results.Movies are divided into short sections (5-10 min. each, one section per class); each section is used for a differentlanguage exercise (speaking, writing, reading, listening, vocabulary or grammar). In this way, full-length movies (ca.120 minutes) can be converted into 10-15 sections and provide materials for at least 20 hours of class. Originalstrategies have been studied, so that this method can be used with a wide range of movies and languages.Working with small sections, a new section every class, increases students’ interest for plot (curiosity makes themdiscuss about next “episodes”) and characters, as well as their global comprehension of plot and language (subtitlesare not needed); the empathetic relationship with plot and characters makes language exercises more effective andcaptivating.Further important result: teachers can use movies also for practicing the abilities of writing and reading.Project implementation took place at Centro di lingua e cultura italiana per stranieri, Milan, and Politecnico di Milano,Italy, beetween 2005 and 2011.
