Rafael Siqueira Cruz, Daniel Moreira de Sousa Pinna

  • The paper aims to study collaborative animation models — production models whereupon a bunch of individualssum forces over a problem solution or by achieving a common goal — by studying two recent successful cases inwhich collaborative production methodologies were applied: the movies Big Buck Bunny and Live Music. Basedon different strategies, both movies are excellent examples of collaborative economy concept applied to animationindustry. Collaborative economy would enable a reorganization of the elements that compose animation productionworkflow; solving the problem of the lack of local trained professionals in low-income countries and the technicaldisadvantage of small studios when competing to international ‘major’ established studios. It is an initiative that couldmove emerging economies’ animation market, introducing new professionals and studios to international markets, promoting technical exchange between artists and professionals all over the world and including new and youngtalented professionals. The case studies show that it is possible to dare in such competitive market without losing the quality and profitabilityof the animated pieces, being even capable to conclude these productions in an equal or (eventually) smaller timethan similar standard productions. The benefits brought by these models are tangible, enabling more dynamics, creative and faster productions which, in some cases, have technical, aesthetical and narrative qualities comparableto established studios’ features, by just using free motivated collectivity power, guided by a clear goal.
