The combination of French creativity, technological advances and the dynamics induced by the government plan,called “Recherche-image”, has enabled France to be very advanced in the early 1980s in the field of synthesis imageprocessing and digital image. As a result, post-production companies, research laboratories, teaching methods werecreated, placing France in second place worldwide, just behind the United States. Yet, most books and websitesoutlining the recent history ignore the French side. The computer graphics were first shown in the short films,commercials and music videos and have integrated the long line in history of special effects and illusions of cinema.Through the presentation of companies and the formal analysis of the images we will see how the digital is graduallyintegrated into the panoply of visual effects French production and French post-productions. Of a dozen companiesin 1980, only two remain very active nowadays. This paper will seek to understand the construction of this contextthrough a historical approach, to highlight the French touch, from past to present.
