La obesidad supone el quinto factor de riesgo de defunción en el mundo, según la OMS. En el año 2008 esta organización, estimó que 1400 millones de adultos padecían sobrepeso, aproximadamente, 1 de cada 10 personas eran obesas. Dentro del campo de la nutrición, numerosos estudios han demostrado la relación entre el tipo de dieta y la obesidad. Por otra parte, desde que se consiguió interpretar el genoma humano, existe un campo más especializado, la genómica nutricional. Las investigaciones revisadas han encontrado 600 genes relacionados con la obesidad entre ellos el gen FTO y gen MC4R.

Obesity is the fifth risk factor for death in the world, according to the WHO. In 2008, this organization estimated that 1.4 billion adults were overweight; approximately 1 in 10 people were obese. Within the field of nutrition, numerous studies have shown the relationship between the type of diet and obesity. On the other hand, since it was possible to interpret the human genome, there is a more specialized field, nutritional genomics. The research reviewed has found 600 genes related to obesity, including the FTO gene and the MC4R gene.
