Resumen de Proyecto LEER: Una iniciativa para fomentar el aprendizaje de la lectura

  Este artículo presenta una iniciativa del Programa de Español del Departamento de Educación de Puerto Rico para implementar el Proyecto LEER durante dos años escolares como proyecto innovador en 76 escuelas, con el fin de ayudar a los estudiantes de primero a tercer grado con gran rezago en la lectura. Mediante la estrategia "Aprendizaje basado en proyectos", los estudiantes de nivel superior e intermedio sirven de tutores para ayudar a resolver una de las situaciones más difíciles que se advierte en la escuela elemental. Como resultado, los niños aprendices mejoraron la fluidez al leer y la comprensión. Además, se sintieron motivados al recibir ayuda de otro estudiante. De otra parte, los estudiantes tutores desarrollaron cualidades de liderato, mejoraron su autoestima y las relaciones interpersonales; incluso, algunos expresaron su deseo de ser maestros.

  This article presents an initiative of the Spanish Program of the Department of Education of Puerto Rico to implement Proyecto LEER during two school years as an innovative project in 76 schools. The aim of this initiative is to help students from first to third grade with great lag in reading. Through the Project-based learning strategy high school and middle school students help as tutors to solve one of the most difficult situations found in elementary school. As a result, apprentice children improved reading fluency and comprehension. They were also motivated to receive help from another student. On the other hand, tutor students developed leadership qualities, improved their self-esteem and interpersonal relationships, and some expressed their desire to be teachers.
