  • Resumen
    • Scientific writing and dissemination is being strongly affected by the unfolding of the Information Era. The rapid evolution and improvement of Internet is making available revolutionary alternatives to scientific journals, whose conventional dissemination has become a business concern of high profit. Extremely high subscription rates make it difficult to libraries and interested individuals in the developed world to keep updated in science, virtually impossible for those in the developing countries. Free online journals are beginning to challenge the major scholarly publications in the USA and elsewhere. On the other hand, the introduction of new publication practices through Internet, such as peer-review, auto-archive and open access, are offering promising perspectives for scientific advancement in less developed societies. This alternative is examined in this editorial article from a geographical point of view and within the context of a brand new geography profession of the tropical realm.
