Resumen de Geografias da produção cinematográfica portuguesa contemporânea

Soraia Silva

  • There is little doubt in Geography of the important role of cultural and creative economies in the internationalcompetitiveness of cities and regions (Musterd and Murie, 2010), but this does not mean that all places haveequal capacities to attract and develop them, as these activities present quite specific territorial (Scott, 2000) andorganizational (Caves, 2000) patterns. Following previous works from Brito Henriques (2003) and Costa (2007) tothe analysis of the cultural economy in the Lisbon region, this paper will specifically focus on the national geographiesof the Portuguese cinema economy in the first years of the 21st century, and in more detail in the Metropolitan LisbonArea. A second part of this paper offers some insights of the production processes of three Portuguese fiction films. The personal trajectories and networks of the directors and producers, the underlying logics of the cinematographicproduction and the Portuguese institutional specificities all prove valid contributions in explaining the strengths of theterritorial concentration of this activity in the Lisbon region.
