    • Academic geography has undergone a rather uneven development in the tropical world. While countries like Brazil and Mexico, and India and Singapur exhibit a respectable learned tradition, which has advanced university geography up to the doctoral level, many other countries lack of any college geography. In a few instances, some progress is being made in this respect. Latin American universities in Costa Rica, Colombia, and Venezuela have established geography departments offering geographic careers at both the undergraduate and advanced levels. Just as was the case in Europe and the United States over a century ago, graduate training is seen here as the crucial step in the development of the field. There is much concern, though, on the academic and scientific standards of the new projects. By and large, there appears to be a serious downgrading of graduate education in many fields of learning in much of the developing world. Consequently, if geography is to be a competent and apt tool for development in these regions, great care must be taken in the processes of design, resource allocation and implementation of their new master's and doctoral programs.
