The stop-motion animation is an artistic expression that was born in the origins of the cinema. The first documentedexperiments in this technique were registered still in the silent movies, at the end of the XIX century. A big part of itsexpressivity could be attributed to the presence of articulated puppets, whose development was influenced by thepuppets theater. Objects full of symbolism and articulated figures used for the mass entertainment and rituals followthe human being since the ancient civilizations, and the puppet - actor and character in the animated movies - canbe used by the director / animator / artist as a way to represent symbols and concepts in a poetic plot. In this project,we prepared a reading about the history of stop-motion animation, since the origins of the cinema and animationfilms, approaching the development of production methods, as well the articulated puppets, along the productions. We highlight the names of some important animators, to the gender and techniques, as well some of their works, following the development and popularity of stop-motion on the world scene.
