Direct heiress of the serial novel and all the various forms of fiction by slices stemming from the XIXth century, theAmerican television series also results from the melodramatic theater. We can find in it common contents (a re-useof the genres, the intrigues and the characters). As those contents owe to the sensationalism of novels by slice, theshape which they take nowadays stays close to it. The writing of the television serial fiction is subjected to the samerules as the serial novel or the theatre. These are dictated by external conditions linked to the economy or to themode of production. The writing by slices, for literature or television, has to develop loyalty of a public and make himback day after day, week after week and from a season to the other one. It tries then to operate a set of narrativetechniques stimulating the effect of expectation of the «reader», its curiosity and obliging him to wonder about theanswers remained unsettled or the various narrative units frozen in full action. As well as the division of a play wasgoverned by the time taken by candlesticks to waste away, the television writing is also divided into acts punctuatingthe narrative. So, the broadcast serial fiction is going to reactivate the ancient techniques and to create new ones,more appropriate to this contemporary medium also close to the cinema, such as the “cliffhanger”.
