Study about the expressive use of noises in Alberto Cavalcanti’s cinema exemplified in Caiçara (1950), Terra éSempre Terra (1951) and O Canto do Mar (1953), films produced by him in Brazil. The research aims to highlightthe utilization in these movies of unsynchronized and undefined sounds, as well as “functional noises”. In addition tofilms, the opinions of Alberto Cavalcanti published in interviews, articles and in the book Film and Reality were alsoanalyzed. The study’s results indicate the originality of the filmmaker’s sounds propositions, especially in regard tothe application of the “functional noises”.
