From the 90s of the last century and, especially, in the first years of the new millennium, there was a significant increase in historical, canonical, ecumenical and ecclesiological studies on synodality. One of the aspects that caught the attention of some scholars was the participation of laymen and laywomen in events and synodal institutions throughout the history of the Church. The present text offers a brief summary of this fact, proposes an interpretation, raises some questions about the participation of laymen and laywomen in the institutions where current law provides for it and, finally, suggests – in the form of questions – measures to be synodically constructed and that can contribute to the adequate confrontation of the challenges that are posed, at the present moment, to life and mission of the Church.

A partir dos anos 90 do século passado e, especialmente, nos primeiros anos do novo milênio, deu-se um aumento significativo de estudos de caráter histórico, canônico, ecumênico e eclesiológico sobre sinodalidade. Um dos aspectos que chamou a atenção de alguns estudiosos foi a participação dos leigos e leigas em eventos e instituições sinodais ao longo da história da Igreja. O presente texto oferece uma breve síntese deste fato, propõe uma sua interpretação, levanta alguns questionamentos sobre a participação dos leigos e leigas nas instituições em que o direito atual a prevê e, finalmente, sugere – sob forma de interrogações – medidas a serem sinodalmente construídas e que possam contribuir para o enfrentamento adequado dos desafios que estão postos, no momento presente, para a vida e a missão da Igreja.
