    Este artículo tiene como objetivo reconstituir la compleja coyuntura militar y social de Chile a finales del siglo XVI, que se agudizó durante el alzamiento general mapuche de 1598, en conexión con las reacciones de la monarquía, en particular, las del virrey del Perú y los funcionarios virreinales para apoyar con urgencia los esfuerzos bélicos castellanos en el combate con enemigo mapuche. Junto a ello, se analizan las propuestas relativas a la adopción de medidas de mayor alcance para poner definitivamente término a la llamada guerra de Chile, que condujeron al establecimiento de una frontera, la creación de un ejército y la legalización de la esclavitud mapuche

    The objective of this article is to reconstruct the complex military and social conjuncture of Chile at the end of the 16th century, which became more aggravated during the general mapuche uprising of 1598, in connection to the reactions of the monarchy, particularly, those of the Viceroy of Peru and the viceregal officials to urgently support the Castilian war efforts in combating the mapuche enemy. Along with that, the proposals about taking longer range measures to definitely end the so called War of Chile, which derived in the establishment of a border, the creation of an army and the legalization of mapuche slavery, are analysed.
