Las adquisiciones de objetos precolombinos en el Museo Arqueológico Nacional (MAN) a finales del siglo XIX se incrementaron notablemente gracias a exposiciones temporales celebradas en Madrid (en 1881 o en 1892) y campañas que promovieron el espíritu nacionalista. Entre esos objetos figuran numerosas falsificaciones que nos permiten aproximarnos al imaginario construido sobre el pasado americano. No solo los objetos eran falsos, sus asociaciones, contextos e interpretacionessobre sus utilizaciones o simbolismos eran también recreaciones erróneas que falseaban el conocimiento del pasado. En este ejemplo, de la adquisición de piezas a Cayetano Mexía, y a su viuda, los objetos de piedra y especialmente las máscaras de obsidiana están sugiriendo una predilección por un tipo de objetos, que los falsificadores van proporcionando a los coleccionistas, adaptándose a los gustos de materiales y arriesgándose cada vez más en piezas de mayor tamaño o vistosidad.

Acquisitions of pre-Columbian objects at the National Archaeological Museum at the end of the 19th century increased significantly thanks to temporary exhibitions held in Madrid (in 1881 or 1892) and campaigns that promoted the nationalist spirit. Among these objects are numerous forgeries that allow us to get closer to the imaginary built on the American past. Not only were the objects false, their associations, contexts and interpretations of their uses or symbolism were also erroneous recreations that falsified knowledge of the past. In this example of the acquisition of pieces from Cayetano Mexía, and his widow, the stone objects and especially the obsidian masks are suggesting a predilection for a type of objects, which the forgers provide to collectors, adapting to the tastes of materials and taking more and more risks in larger or more attractive pieces.
