This article reviews the different ideas that have been put forward for classifying dialects and subdialects in the Asturleonese linguistic domain, from early works by Arias de Miranda (1858) and Menéndez Pidal (1906) through to more recent proposals by García Arias (2003) and González i Planas (2004). All these proposals have adhered to traditional dialectological patterns. The division of Asturleonese into three macro-dialects (western, central and eastern) has enjoyed wide consensus among scholars for over a century. Notwithstanding certain discrepancies, quite a few points of consensus also exist in favour of sub-dialectal division, especially with regard to Western Asturian, but there is some disagreement whether certain zones on the eastern flank of the domain which have undergone a vigorous process of Castilianisation should still be considered Asturleonese-speaking areas.
The paper includes maps, schematic tables and comparison charts.
