INTRODUCTION: There are few validated surveys that comprehensively measure parental satisfaction in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) and none of them in Spanish. The EMpowerment of PArents in THe Intensive Care Neonatology (EMPATHIC-N) instrument is presented as a satisfaction questionnaire that measures important practices regarding Family Centered Care (FCC).

OBJECTIVES: To determine the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the EMPATHIC-N to assess the satisfaction of parents of infants admitted to NICU and Intermediate Care (IC).

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Prospective study in a Spanish neonatal unit using surveys of parents of admitted infants. Inclusion criteria were: stay longer than 24 hours and informed consent. Parents whose child died, readmissions or language barrier were excluded. Previously, a pilot study was carried out with 8 parents to complete the cultural adaptation process. The psychometric evaluation was conducted as a cross-sectional observational study to determine reliability and convergent validity.  RESULTS: Sixty-five surveys were collected. Cronbach's α was greater than 0.7, indicating high internal consistency. Validity was measured by correlating the 5 domains with the 4 general satisfaction items, demonstrating adequate correlation (rs: 0.4-0.76; p < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONS: The Spanish version of the EMPATHIC-N seems a valid and reliable instrument to measure parental satisfaction in neonatal units, but studies with larger samples are necessary to obtain definitive conclusions.
