    This paper aims to explain the context in which the debate about the expression (Ausdruck) present in Maurice Merleau-Ponty's Phenomenology of Perception arises. It is not a matter of debating the notion within this work, but of clarifying its origin in phenomenology and its dialogue with other philosophers. For this, we will divide the proposal into four parts: firstly, to understand how Husserl in Logical Investigations inaugurates this term in phenomenology, later to understand how Gurwitsch resumes and reframes the expression in Husserlian phenomenology using Gestalt Theory; address the possible parallel between Cassirer's expression and notion of “symbolic pregnancy” (symbolische Prägnanz); and finally begin a description of the proposal in Merleau-Ponty.

    Esse artigo tem o objetivo de explicitar o contexto em que surge o debate sobre a expressão (Ausdruck) presente na Fenomenologia da Percepção de Maurice Merleau-Ponty. Não se trata de debater a noção dentro dessa obra, mas de esclarecer sua origem na fenomenologia e seu diálogo com outros filósofos. Para isso vamos dividir a proposta em quatro partes: primeiramente entender como Husserl em Investigações Lógicas inaugura esse termo na fenomenologia, posteriormente entender como Gurwitsch retoma e ressignifica a expressão na fenomenologia husserliana utilizando a Teoria Gestalt; abordar o possível paralelo entre a expressão e a noção de “pregnância simbólica” (symbolische Prägnanz) de Cassirer; e por último iniciar uma descrição da proposta em Merleau-Ponty.
