The text aims to explore the paths that led the nobleman D. João de Castro to believe in the prophetic gifts of Bandarra, and to discuss the relationship between belief and disbelief in the context of the macro-historical transformations in the Christian’s Europe transition from the 16th to the 17th centuries. I understand that his elaborations expressed in a unique, yet not isolated, way one of the many combinations between religion and politics with convergences and disputes between these two fields in the Early Modern period. Belief and disbelief, an inseparable duo in the Modern Era, oscillated between orthodoxy and heresy, fidelity and betrayal. This text analyzes some contours of these boundaries, proposing a discussion on the means to identify what could be false or true in religious matters in the canonical Treatises of the period and the adaptation carried out in the writings of João de Castro.

O objetivo deste texto é estudar os percursos que levaram o fidalgo D. João de Castro a crer nos dons proféticos de Bandarra, e discutir as relações entre crença e descrença no contexto das transformações macro-históricas que marcaram a transição dos séculos XVI para o XVII na Europa cristã. Entendo que suas elaborações expressaram de forma singular, mas não isolada, uma das muitas combinações entre religião e política em período atravessado por confluências e disputas entre estes dois campos na chamada primeira Modernidade. Crença e descrença, binômio inseparável na Época Moderna, transitaram entre a ortodoxia e a heresia, a fidelidade e a traição. Este texto analisa alguns contornos dessas fronteiras, propondo uma discussão sobre os meios para identificar o que podia ser falso ou verdadeiro em matéria religiosa nos Tratados canônicos do período e a adaptação operada nos escritos de João de Castro.
