Periferia, um termo crítico: distanciamentos espaciais, sociais e simbólicos nas cidades

    The objective of this article is to approach the complex character of the definition of what is periphery, considering that the relationships between the different distances that overlap the peripheral reality in cities cannot be understood in an isolated and disciplinary way, as if they did not interact and composein a systemic way this face of urban reality. Therefore, in light of a theoretical debate on the subject, this research questions how subjects inserted in this context define their urban experiences and assess the influence of their places of residence inthe constitution of their citizenship, analyzing their narratives. With the study, it was observed that the distances that mark the peripheries are not quantifiable only by the physical distances that exist between such places and what is taken as the center, but also by the living conditions imposed that materialize the exclusion. The concept of the term, therefore, is insufficient when it considers only the geographical criterion and disregards its link to social order and power, elements that concretizeits association with places and subjects that suffer from state omission.

    O objetivo deste artigo é abordar o caráter complexo da definição do que vem a ser periferia, ponderando que as relações entre os diversos afastamentos que se sobrepõem à realidade periférica nas cidades não podem ser compreendidos de modo isolado e disciplinar, como se não interagissem e compusessem de modo sistêmico essa face da realidade urbana. Para tanto, além do debate teórico sobre a tema, fruto de levantamento bibliográfico, este trabalho analisa as narrativas de sujeitos inseridos nesse contexto, questionando-os como definem e avaliam as suas experiências urbanas e a influência dos seus locais de moradia na constituição de suas cidadanias. Com o estudo, observou-se- que os afastamentos que marcam as periferias não são quantificáveis apenas pelas distâncias físicas que existem entre tais locais e o que é tomado por centro, mas também pelas condições de vida impostas que materializam a exclusão. A conceituação do termo, portanto, é insuficiente quando considera apenas o critério geográfico e desconsidera a sua vinculação à ordem social e ao poder, elementos que concretizam a sua associação a lugares e sujeitos que sofrem com a omissão estatal.
