«Los tenientes generales hablan»: El terrorismo como causa de la involución militar

    El objetivo de esta investigación es explicar la relación entre terrorismo e involución militar a partir de las declaraciones que tres tenientes generales con mando en Región Militar —Jesús González del Yerro (Canarias), Pedro Merry Gordon (II) y Jaime Milans del Bosch (III)— hicieron en septiembre de 1979. En estos discursos criticaron el proceso de cambio político y las acciones del Gobierno para hacer frente a la oleada terrorista y a la crisis global que vivía España e incluso amenazaron con una intervención militar. Sin embargo, el Gobierno no les cesó. El resultado fue que la debilidad del Ejecutivo para castigar a estos militares díscolos fue aprovechada por los sectores involucionistas civiles y militares para resucitar sus planes que culminaron en el golpe de Estado del 23 de febrero de 1981.

    The aim of this research is to explain the relationship between terrorism and military involution based on the statements that three lieutenant generals with command in the Military Region —Jesús González del Yerro (Canarias), Pedro Merry Gordon (II) and Jaime Milans del Bosch (III)— made in September 1979. In these speeches they criticized the process of political change and the actions of the Government to face the terrorist wave and the global crisis that Spain was experiencing and even threatened military intervention. However, the Government did not stop them. The result was that the weakness of the Executive to punish these military rebels was taken advantage of by the civilian and military involutionist sectors to resurrect their plans which culminated in the coup d’état of February 23, 1981.
