    Tras definir los estándares XML de documentos históricos a través de W·3C y probarlo en XLink y XPointer, empezamos a investigar este lenguaje descriptor tan prometedor en otros campos, analizando su posible aplicación en el tratamiento de fuentes históricas. La metodología de definición DTD se probó en dos casos, al poder extenderse luego a fuentes de carácter más amplio, implicaba también el uso de herramientas de software para XML. El primer caso estudia las técnicas constructivas medievales, basada en documentos, descubrimientos arqueológicos y, sobre todo, descripciones iconográficas de imágenes medievales (pinturas, miniaturas, mosaicos, etc.). El segundo trata de los asentamientos de las Cruzadas en Tierra Santa, utilizando desde crónicas medievales hasta el archivo notarial del Reino de Jerusalén. En ambas - tan divergentes- el conjunto de documentos es limitado pero bien conocido, En consecuencia, centraremos nuestra atención en el proceso de DTD y el consiguiente tratamiento XML de las fuentes.

    After the definition of XML standards by the W3C and the submission of proposals for XLink and XPointer, we started investigating if this description language, which looks so promising in other fields, may have interesting applications also in the treatment of historical sources. So we consider two sample applications, to test a proposed methodology of DTD definition, which we are going to apply later to a wider class of historical sources. The test involves also software tools for XML use. The first sample concerns the study of medieval building techniques and documents involved are texts from medieval sources, archaeological finds and, above all, iconographical descriptions of medieval images as paintings, miniatures, mosaics and so on. In the second one, Crusader settlements in the Holy land are considered; sources vary from contemporary chronicles to the notarial archive of the Jerusalem Kingdom. In both samples - quite different from each other - there is a limited set of documents to consider and they are well known to the authors, so that attention may be focused on the process of DTD definition and subsequent XML treatment of sources.
