Internet como herramienta auxiliar para el estudio de las bibliotecas en la Edad Moderna

    Nuestro estudio sobre las bibliotecas de época moderna toma como fuente la documentación notarial. Dentro de la rica tipología que podemos encontrar en los protocolos notariales los inventarios, épocas y compra-ventas, son las escrituras que más información nos ofrecen sobre ellas. De estos tres tipos de documentos, preferentemente, hemos extraído un buen número de bibliotecas particulares para, posteriormente, analizarlas y reconstruir el inventario o catálogo de la biblioteca. Se ha indicado muchas veces que el estudio de las bibliotecas del Antiguo Régimen presenta bastantes dificultades, porque las fuentes suelen pecar de poco exhaustivas a la hora de dar detalles sobre los libros: el autor y el título son citados, generalmente, con gran economía de palabras, sólo a veces se indica también el lugar y/o año de impresión, el impresor de la obra raras veces suele figurar. Encontrar una biblioteca con todos los elementos bien referenciados (autor, título, pie de imprenta y formato) es excepcional. Por estas razones la identificación de los libros se convierte la mayoría de las veces en una tarea ardua, que nos obliga a recurrir a numerosas obras de referencia: repertorios, catálogos, tipobibliografías, etc. Pero la consulta de estas obras de referencia no siempre es fácil, sobre todo si el investigador vive en una localidad cuyas bibliotecas no poseen las obras que necesita, y se ve obligado por ello a desplazarse a otros lugares para realizar la consulta. Internet se presenta como una forma de solucionar, al menos, en parte, el problema de la carencia de obras de referencia, gracias a los catálogos de bibliotecas con fondos de libros antiguos que se encuentran en la Red. Por otra parte soluciona el problema de los desplazamientos, puesto que desde cualquier ordenador con acceso a Internet podemos realizar la consulta. El objetivo de esta comunicación es, precisamente, comentar los resultados que hemos obtenido, con sus ventajas e inconvenientes, al emplear este recurso electrónico como fuente para la identificación del libro antiguo.

    Our study on the libraries of modern times takes as a source the notarial documentation. Within the rich typology that we can find in the notarial protocols the inventories, invoices and dealings, these are the writings that more information offer us on them. Of these three types of documents, preferably, we have extracted a good number of particular libraries for, later on, analyse them and reconstruct the inventory or catalogue of the library. It has been indicated many times that the study of the libraries of the Ancient Regime presents many difficulties, because usually the sources are not very exhaustive when giving details on the books: the author and the title are mentioned, generally, with a great economy of words, it is only sometimes indicated also the place and/or year of impression, the printer of the work rarely appears. Finding a library with all the well referenced elements (author, title, foot of printing and format) is exceptional. For these reasons the identification of the books becomes most of the times an arduous task that forces us to appeal to numerous reference works: repertoires, catalogues, typebibliographies, etc. But the consultation of these reference works is not always easy, mainly if the researcher lives in a town whose libraries do not possess the works that he needs, and he is forced to move to other places to carry out the consultation. Internet is presented as a way of solving, at least, partly, the problem of the lack of reference works, thanks to the catalogues of libraries with ancient book funds that are in the Net. On the other hand it solves the problem of displacements, since you can carry out the consultation from any computer with access to Internet. The objective of this communication is, in fact, to comment the results that we have obtained, with their advantages and disadvantages, when using this electronic resource as a source for the identification of the ancient book.
