Resumen de Memorias del diseño cubano: La EMPROVA y su Departamento de Proyectos y Diseños

  Creada en 1974, la Empresa de Producciones Varias, conocida como EMPROVA, y su Departamento de Proyectos y Diseños representan un importante capítulo en la historia del diseño cubano de la segunda mitad del siglo XX. La empresa reunió diversos talleres en los que se produjeron vajillas de cerámica, estampados, textiles, luminarias, mobiliario y diversos utilitarios que serían usados en interiores de hoteles, hospitales, escuelas y casas habitación, así como en sedes del Partido Comunista. El equipo del Departamento de Proyectos y Diseños, liderado por María Victoria Caignet y Gonzalo Córdoba, aspiraba a una producción que representase un frente importante para la sustitución de importaciones, con propuestas acordes al contexto nacional y una imagen de lo cubano que dialogara con el diseño internacional y el lenguaje moderno, y que, al mismo tiempo, respondiera al proyecto socialista. En este artículo, mediante entrevistas e investigación en archivos y publicaciones de periódicos y revistas encontrados en el Instituto Superior de Diseño Industrial y la Biblioteca Nacional de Cuba José Martí en La Habana, se profundiza en la historia de la EMPROVA y su Departamento de Proyectos y Diseños.

  Founded in 1974, the Empresa de Producciones Varias known as EMPROVA and its Department of Projects and Designs represent an important chapter in the history of Cuban design in the second half of the 20th century. The company brought together several ateliers that produced ceramic tableware, prints, textiles, lighting fixtures, furniture and various utilitarian items used in the interiors of hotels, hospitals, schools and homes, as well as Communist Party headquarters. The team of the Projects and Designs Department, led by María Victoria Caignet and Gonzalo Córdoba, aspired to a production that represented a front for import substitution, with proposals in line with the national context and a Cuban image that would dialogue with international design and modern language, and at the same time, responded to the socialist project. In this article, through interviews and research in archives and newspaper and magazine publications found at the Instituto Superior de Diseño Industrial and the José Martí National Library of Cuba in Havana, we delve into the history of EMPROVA and its Department of Projects and Designs.
