  Las cárceles constituyen una singular tipología arquitectónica asociada al patrimonio incómodo como ejemplo de una herramienta de control político y social, concebida para cas-tigar a delincuentes, disidentes y opositores. A pesar del conjunto de valores que atesoran, el reconocimiento de su calidad patrimonial es relativamente reciente y avanza con dificultad, ya que, dada la naturaleza represiva de estas construcciones, a la sociedad le resulta complejo reconocer sus méritos. La aparición de nuevas corrientes como el adaptive reuse en el campo de la intervención en el patrimonio arquitectónico ha favorecido la posibilidad de considerar la reutilización de estos edificios. En este artículo se exploran tanto la transformación de las prisiones de lugares represivos a espacios patrimoniales como la diversidad de actitudes frente a su conservación a través de una selección de casos, sin la pretensión de ser un estudio conclusivo sino el comienzo de una investigación más exhaustiva

  Prisons are a unique architectural typology associated with uncomfortable heritage as an example of a tool of political and social control, designed to punish criminals, dissidents and opponents. Despite the set of values they treasure, the recognition of their heritage quality is relatively recent and is progressing with difficulty, since given the repressive nature of these constructions, society finds it difficult to recognise their merits. The emergence of new currents as adaptive reuse in the field of architectural heritage intervention has favoured the possibility of considering the reuse of these buildings. This article explores both the transformation of prisons rom repressive places to heritage spaces and the diversity of attitudes towards their conservation through a selection of cases without the pretension of being a conclusive study, but rather the beginning of a more comprehensive investigation
