A study of the four artists who decorated ms. Français 187 of the Bibliothèque nationale de France prompts a discussion of painting in Liguria during the second quarter of the fourteenth century. The codex studied here -a cultivated manual of devotional education for lay people- is evidence of how decisive Giotto's Paduan legacy was for the evolution of Genoese art, beyond the well-known influence of Siena. The manuscript is compared with two small altarpieces, also proposed here as Ligurian in origin because they reflect the same context. In addition, the thorough examination of ms. Français 187 reveals the eclectic and lively cultural climate of early-fourteenth-century Genoa.
