Resumen de La censura del gélido invierno de 1728-1729 en la Gazeta de Madrid en comparación con la prensa europea

El artículo ofrece un análisis de la Gazeta de Madrid en torno al gélido invierno de 1728-1729 que produjo un auténtico desastre europeo, cotejado a partir del ingente volumen de noticias entregadas por cuatro periódicos coetáneos (sus fuentes en la época). Los resultados sugieren que a la hora de confeccionar la Gazeta la secretaría de Estado censuró los aspectos más críticos de la catástrofe invernal editada por las gacetas europeas. Estas aducían que murieron miles de personas por las temperaturas extremas, los efectos adversos de las nevadas o de la congelación de los cursos fluviales, e inundaciones destructivas. Todo ello en beneficio de exponer en la Gazeta una imagen suficiente y res-ponsable de la gestión del frío por parte de los monarcas europeos. Se pretende con ello contribuir a una mejor caracterización del clima europeo durante la primera mitad del siglo XVIII, a la vez que se sugiere la censura periodística como hipótesis de partida (en laque subyacían intereses de Estado).

The article offers a analysis of the Gazeta de Madrid about the freezing winter of 1728-1729, which produced a real European disaster, collated from the huge volume of news items provided by four contemporary newspapers (their sources at the time). Theresults suggest that in compiling the Gazeta, the Secretary of State censored the most critical aspects of the winter catastrophe reported by the European gazettes. They claimed that thousands of people died because of extreme temperatures, the adverse effects of snowfall or the freezing of watercourses, and destructive floods. All in the interest of presenting a sufficient and responsible picture in the Gazeta of the cold management by European monarchs. The aim is to contribute to a better characterisation of the Europeanclimate during the first half of the 18th century, while at the same time suggesting journalistic censorship as a starting hypothesis (in which state interests were underlying).
