  • Resumen
    • Pine wilt disease, caused by Bursaphenchus xylophilus, can cause serious damage to Spanish pine forests for years to come. Since 2013, the Lourizán Forest Research Center has developed a line within its Pinus pinaster and Pinus radiata genetic improvement programs for the selection of individuals resistant to this disease. Because it is a quarantine organism, the multiple inoculation tests carried out have been carried out in a greenhouse under controlled conditions. In these studies, the susceptibility of different species was evaluated, as well as provenances and families of maritime and insigne pine. In all cases, genetic variation has been found, which shows that genetic improvement is a viable tool to control this disease. Different nematode strains were also evaluated to study the possible genetic variation between strains in virulence in both pine species. Recently, non-destructive evaluation tests are also being carried out. All this, in addition to generating knowledge about the disease, has led to the cataloging, in 2020, of six progenitors of the P. pinaster family, which have greater tolerance to this nematode. Currently, the Xunta de Galicia (regional government) is carrying out plantations with this material in the demarcated area.
