Between the end of the fifties and the first half of the sixties, the PCI was hit by the radical changes that took place following the “economic boom”. On the basis of economic growth, cultural consumption also changes profoundly. Among these, the irruption of pop music from abroad, especially from the Anglo-Saxon world. This article aims to study the relationship between communism and pop music in Italy, through the analyses and debates hosted in the main communist magazines between 1956 – the beginning of the dissolution of Marxist unity following the XX Congress of the PCUS – and 1964 – date of Togliatti’s death, which will mark a watershed in the relationship between the communist world and Italian culture.

Tra la fine degli anni Cinquanta e la prima metà dei Sessanta il Pci è investito dai radicali mutamenti intervenuti in seguito al “boom economico”. Sulla scorta della crescita economica sono anche i consumi culturali a cambiare profondamente. Tra questi, l’irruzione della musica leggera dall’estero, soprattutto dal mondo anglosassone. Il presente articolo ha come obiettivo lo studio del rapporto tra comunismo e musica leggera in Italia, attraverso le analisi e i dibattiti ospitati sulle principali riviste comuniste tra il 1956 – avvio della dissoluzione dell’unità marxista in seguito al XX Congresso del Pcus – e il 1964 – data della morte di Togliatti, che segnerà uno spartiacque nel rapporto tra mondo comunista e cultura italiana.
