Resumen de Apuntes sobre la historia de las estadísticas penitenciarias en Argentina, 1906-2016

El artículo analiza el proceso de construcción de estadísticas penitenciarias a nivel nacional en la República Argentina. Setoma como fecha inicial para este repaso el Primer Censo Carcelario realizado en 1906 y, a partir de allí, se da cuenta de lasmarchas y contramarchas en la realización de relevamientos penitenciarios nacionales, repasando aspectos normativos, institucionales y políticos que influyeron en este proceso. En este recorrido, se destacan las diferentes iniciativas y el alcance quetuvo cada una de ellas, dando cuenta también del rol de algunos funcionarios que fueron los principales emprendedores deestos proyectos. Asimismo, con las limitaciones y recaudos del caso, se analizan los datos existentes y la evolución en las tasasde encarcelamiento en la Argentina en el período 1906-2016.

The article analyzes the process of construction of penitentiary statistics in Argentina. Taking in consideration that the first survey about prisons was conducted in 1906, the article unravels the developments and obstacles of the history of official information about state prisons by reviewing norms and political aspects that influence the manufacturing of these data.
Throughout this journey we reach the analysis till present times, were its highlight the different models and initiatives that shape the configuration of official data, noting the role of state officials that were the main entrepreneurs of these projects.
Moreover, apart from the limitations and precautions over official data in Argentina, there is also a study on the evolution of imprisonment rates in Argentina from 1906 till 2016.
