  • In 1834, aged sixteen, Alfred Stevens was sent to Italy to study art. Accounts of his eight years abroad have relied largely on anecdotes he told his friends much later. New archival research provides a more accurate picture of Stevens's activities throughout this period and in particular the time he spent as a student in Florence
