Resumen de Jean-Charles de Borda, 1776: Aportaciones documentales sobre una visita científica histórica

  A partir de documentos procedentes de archivos de París y Tenerife, examinamos varios episodios de la estancia que realizaron en 1776 en Tenerife los expedicionarios que acompañaban a Jean-Charles, caballero de Borda, en su misión científica, en particular la excursión que hizo al Teide y la organizada por Antoine Chastenet de Puységur, Basset de Chateaubourg y Luis Árguedas a un lugar cercano al pueblo de Arico, con vistas a extraer momias de una cueva guanche, tres de las cuales serían depositadas en las colecciones de historia natural de París y Madrid. La confrontación de estos nuevos documentos con los impresos que circularon a partir de finales del siglo xviii sobre este último episodio permite no solo poner de manifiesto los errores e inexactitudes que circularon en estos relatos durante todo el siglo xix, sino también la filiación entre estos diferentes textos.

  On the basis of documents from archives in Paris and Tenerife, we examine several episodes of the stay in Tenerife in 1776 of the expeditionaries who accompanied Jean-Charles, chevalier de Borda, on his scientific mission, in particular the excursion he made to the Teide and the one organised by Antoine Chastenet de Puységur, Basset de Chateaubourg and Luis Árguedas to a place near the village of Arico, with the proposal of extracting mummies from a Guanche cave, three of which would be deposited in the natural history collections of Paris and Madrid. A comparison of these new documents with the printed accounts of this last episode that circulated from the end of the 18th century onwards reveals not only the mistakes and inaccuracies that circulated in these accounts throughout the 19th century, but also the relationship between these different texts.
