›Erlebnis‹, ›Gemeinschaft‹ und ›Überwindung der Aufklärung‹: Paul Kluckhohns Deutung der Romantik

    Paul Kluckhohns Arbeiten zur Romantik orientieren sich an Wilhelm Diltheys Bestimmung des Verhältnisses von ›Erlebnis‹ und dessen Ausdruck in Dichtung. Mit diesem Konzept ist der Wunsch nach der Wiederkehr der Einheit des ›Lebens‹ in der Moderne verbunden. Kluckhohn deutet die Romantik im Rahmen dieser kulturkritischen Vorstellung, indem er für den Bereich intimer Beziehungen die romantische Auffassung von ›Liebe‹, für Staat und Gesellschaft das romantische Ideal von ›Gemeinschaft‹ als Orientierungsmodell für die Gegenwart anbietet. Die Romantik wird dabei als Gegensatz zur französischen und englischen Aufklärung und damit als deren deutsche ›Überwindung‹ interpretiert. Der Beitrag analysiert Kontinuität und Wandel dieser Romantik-Deutung von 1910–1947 und geht dabei auch auf das ambivalente Verhältnis dieses Konzepts zur Ideologie des Nationalsozialismus ein.

    Paul Kluckhohn’s works on Romanticism orient themselves around Wilhelm Dilthey’s determination of the relation between Erlebnis and its representation in poetry. The desire for the return of the unity of ›life‹ in modernity is attached to this concept. Kluckhohn interprets Romanticism within the framework of this cultural-critical conception by offering the Romantic conception of ›love‹ for intimate relationships, and the Romantic ideal of Gemeinschaft for the state and society as a model of orientation for the present day. Therefore, Romanticism is interpreted as the antithesis of the French and English Enlightenment, and, thus, as the German ›Overcoming‹ of the latter. The analysis focuses on the continuity and change of Kluckhohn’s interpretation of Romanticism between 1910 and 1947, and also address the concept’s ambivalent attitude to the ideology of National Socialism.
