Muscle synergies are hypothesized to be the central neuromotor mechanism for the optimal control of muscle activations. If correctly estimated, synergies can provide information on healthy and pathologic neural strategies for the execution of movements. We propose to use the analysis of muscle synergies in order to drive the rehabilitation process toward a correct activation set. The rehabilitation strategy envisions the use of neuroprosthetics and robotics to stimulate the central nervous system in terms of muscle activations and limb movements. This approach is proposed to overcome the major drawback of the assist-as-needed paradigm currently used in roboticassisted neurorehabilitation.
