Resumen de La mujer como objeto de la mirada masculina en Madama Sui de Augusto Roa Bastos

Este artículo analiza la figura de la mujer en Madama Sui (1996 [1995]) de Augusto Roa Bastos, interrogando la imagen de la mujer que subyace al discurso narrativo y la estrategia narrativa que moldea la figura principal de la novela. Recurriendo a las teorías del feminismo filosófico y a reflexiones sobre modos de ver, el análisis muestra que Madama Sui emerge como objeto de la mirada masculina que (re)construye su vida y figura. A partir de las identidades asignadas a Madama Sui que nutren la imagen de Japón y la dicotomía Oriente-Occidente en el texto, el artículo también reflexiona sobre la relación alegórica de la historia de Madama Sui con la historia del Paraguay que el autor reinventa en la novela.

This article analyses the female figure in Madama Sui (1996 [1995]) by Augusto Roa Bastos, by questioning the image of women that underlies the narrative discourse as well as the narrative strategy that shapes the novel’s main figure. Drawing on the theories of philosophical feminism and reflections on ways of seeing, the analysis shows that Madama Sui emerges as the object of the male gaze who (re)constructs her life and figure. Based on the identities assigned to Madama Sui, which fuel the image of Japan and the East-West dicho-tomy in the text, this article also reflects on the allegorical link between the story of Madama Sui and the history of Paraguay, which is reinvented in the novel
