The text analyzes the circulation, between Italy and Latin America, of the debates on the relationship between socialism and democracy that arose in the context of the Popular Unity government in Chile (1970-1973). It analyzes how the "lessons of Chile" animated the Italian debate of the time and contributed to shape the Eurocommunist strategy adopted by the Communist Party in the 1970s. It also explores the fact that an area of the Latin American intelligentsia did not significantly register the dilemmas of the Chilean experience but reserved privileged attention to the same issues in its Italian version.
