Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are regarded as an advanced material for chemical sensing due to their sorption properties. Their (sub)nanometer-sized cavities allow the molecular sorption of gases into their porous structure, inducing a refractive index (RI)change in the MOF material, and which in thin-film configuration modulates the wavelength positions of the reflectance peaks, the extent of which depends on the amount of gas adsorbed. To this end, Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework (ZIF-8) has been used to design thin films on silicon substrates, and Fabry-Pérot interferences have been monitored to optically detect volatile organic compounds (VOCs) due to the RI change of the ZIF-8 film.
