La desconocida Augusta Tranquilina y su imagen pública en las fuentes numismáticas y epigráficas

    Furia Sabinia Tranquilina es sin duda una de las emperatrices romanas más desconocidas de todo el siglo III. Las fuentes sólo señalan que era hija del Prefecto del Pretorio Timesteo, y que en el año 241 d.C. se casó con el joven emperador Gordiano III (238-244 d.C.) cuando ambos tenían unos quince o dieciséis años. A pesar de las escasas fuentes literarias que se han conservado sobre ella, se conocen varios epígrafes y sobre todo bastantes monedas de bronce a su nombre, aunque casi todas ellas son de carácter provincial. En el presente artículo analizaremos las distintas series labradas para ella en las cecas imperiales de Roma y de Antioquía y en las provinciales de otras muchas ciudades de Oriente, así como las inscripciones conservadas que fueron erigidas en su honor. De este modo, intentaremos reconstruir la imagen pública de la emperatriz a través de las fuentes numismáticas y epigráficas.

    Furia Sabinia Tranquilina is undoubtedly one of the most unknown Roman empresses of the entire third century. The sources only indicate that she was the daughter of the Prefect of the Praetorium Timesitheus, and that in the year 241 AD. she married the young emperor Gordian III (238-244 AD), when they were both about fifteen or sixteen years old. Despite the few sources that have been preserved about her, several epigraphs are known and, above all, quite a few bronze coins in her name, although almost all of them are of a provincial nature. In this article we will analyze the different series minted for her in the imperial mints of Rome and Antioch and in the provincial ones of many other cities of the East, as well as the preserved inscriptions that were erected in her honor. In this way, we will try to reconstruct the public image of the empress through numismatic and epigraphic sources.
